Swimming Pool Ladders include Escutcheons

Janice’s response:

Hello Madelaine,

Thank you so much for your email. We did not realize the escutcheons were included with the ladder, therefore, we don’t need them, as you predicted.  As for the anchor sockets, please send them.  From looking at the old ladder, it looks like it was installed using anchor sockets so to be on the safe side, my husband thought it would be best if we had them in case we needed them.  Not sure if we can return them if we don’t need them.

Again, thank you very much for bringing this to my attention.  Not often I run across a business that would check with a customer first.

Regards,

Janice T

Hinged In Ground Pool Ladders: Available, But Not Composite

Hi Stuart,

The type of in ground pool ladder you are referring to is called a "hinged ladder". We do carry hinged in ground ladders, but not made of composites.  The only hinged ladders that we carry (and know about) are the stainless steel pool ladder models made by InterFab.

Concerned about the Lack of Steel Reinforcement in Composite Pool Ladders?

The step rungs are made of injection-molded polypropylene. You are correct in that they do not include steel, but they are rated for 275 Lbs. and guaranteed by the manufacturer for 5 years. They include UV inhibitors and will last much longer than the guarantee period in sub-baked pool environments. In the 8 years that we have been selling them we’ve never heard a complaint about one of these step rungs braking. A more common material that steps rungs are made of is ABS which is brittle and which does have a tendency to dry-out and eventually crack. Our step rungs are not made of ABS Plastic.

The outer-core of the ladder rails themselves is a ‘better-than-furniture-grade’ PVC that has a ¼” thick wall. It is extruded from a compound that contains impact modifiers and UV inhibitors. The inner core consists of 1” Schedule 40 pipe that is encapsulated and does not come in contact with the water.

Most pool rail manufacturers (including those that only make steel ladders) have been switching over to non-metallic step rungs, because they hold up better than steel in chlorine and salt pools. Those that do offer steel step rungs usually don’t warranty them against corrosion.

Installing an Elite Pool Ladder

If you were to install the P-421-LP3 pool ladder at 6-1/2″ from the pool wall face instead of 7-1/2″, the gap between the horizontal side rails and the pool wall would increase to 7″ as opposed to the 6″ shown in the diagram below. Although an extension to the bottom bend might enable proper resting of the bumpers against the pool wall, the increased space between the pool ladder and the wall (7″ instead of 6″) would be large enough for a child’s head to enter – and possibly get trapped. An arrangement such as this would not pass code for good reason. We have no extensions that we could provide, but even if we could, we would not do so for safety reasons. I strongly recommend you install the ladder as was intended by the manufacturer even if this might require moving and straightening your anchor sockets. A possible alternative to this would be to use SB-3 surface-mount bases that could be installed over the current anchor sockets (See: http://www.innovativepoolproducts.com/pool-ladder-surface-mount-base.html ). The added aggravation at this stage of the game will be well worth the peace of mind that it will give you afterwards.
