Concerned about the Lack of Steel Reinforcement in Composite Pool Ladders?

The step rungs are made of injection-molded polypropylene. You are correct in that they do not include steel, but they are rated for 275 Lbs. and guaranteed by the manufacturer for 5 years. They include UV inhibitors and will last much longer than the guarantee period in sub-baked pool environments. In the 8 years that we have been selling them we’ve never heard a complaint about one of these step rungs braking. A more common material that steps rungs are made of is ABS which is brittle and which does have a tendency to dry-out and eventually crack. Our step rungs are not made of ABS Plastic.

The outer-core of the ladder rails themselves is a ‘better-than-furniture-grade’ PVC that has a ¼” thick wall. It is extruded from a compound that contains impact modifiers and UV inhibitors. The inner core consists of 1” Schedule 40 pipe that is encapsulated and does not come in contact with the water.

Most pool rail manufacturers (including those that only make steel ladders) have been switching over to non-metallic step rungs, because they hold up better than steel in chlorine and salt pools. Those that do offer steel step rungs usually don’t warranty them against corrosion.
